Hi, I am Florian !

I am a Project Leader at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) in Brussels. My projects involve the development of biogeochemical models and data visualization tools for the Belgian offshore wind farm.

I am particularly interested in developping data visualization and exploitation tools for scientists and policy makers.

Education

2019-23 | PhD in Biogeochemistry, Towards a new insight of the carbon transport in the global ocean (Enjoy it here), Villefranche Oceanographic Laboratory, Sorbonne University, France

2016-18 | Master of Science in Oceanography, University of Liège, Belgium

2013-16 | Bachelor in Applied Sciences, University of Liège, Belgium

Experience

Current | Project Leader, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Belgium

2018-19 | Researcher, University of Liège, Belgium

Data Scientist | Machine Learning Enthusiast | Avid Cyclist

With a PhD in biogeochemistry, I’ve found my true calling at the intersection of data science and marine research. My expertise lies not just in understanding the ocean, but in harnessing the power of data to unlock its secrets.

Professional Highlights

  • Developed an automatic zooplankton classification model using machine learning for autonomous underwater vehicles
  • Created uvpec, a Python package for training image classification models for the Underwater Vision Profiler 6
  • Expertise in Big Data analysis and visualization in oceanography

Projects

I’ve developed several web apps to visualize and analyze ocean carbon dynamics:

  • REFINE
  • ParticleExplorer

Hackathons and Entrepreneurship

I’m passionate about applying data science to real-world challenges. My achievements include:

Copernicus Hackathons

  • 1st Place, Brussels (Belgium) — Detecting acid mine drainage using satellite imagery
  • 3rd Place, Sofia (Bulgaria) — Detecting chlorophyll-a blooms using satellite imagery
  • 5th Place, Cork (Ireland) — Detecting coastal changes for the protection of historical sites using satellite imagery

Start-up Initiatives

  • PARSEC Accelerator — Developed Project EXAMINE, a software prototype for detecting acid mine drainage using open-source Copernicus satellite data
  • Participant in the Copernicus Accelerator program

Interests

When I’m not diving into data, you can find me:

  • Exploring the latest in web app development, particularly Shiny
  • Experimenting with cutting-edge data visualization techniques
  • Keeping up with AI innovations
  • Cycling - because life’s too short to stay indoors!
